Love will save the day
The music world lost a talented voice this weekend. News about the passing of pop singer Whitney Houston traveled fast. Being a music fan, I reminisced about the tunes I grew up on and listened to what I could find of her music.
I came across a song from her 1987 album, Whitney. The lyrics sing:
When you’re feeling down and out, and you’ve got trouble on your mind
Love will save the day
When you’re feeling full of doubt, and fear has got you in a bind
Love will save the day
When your world’s falling apart, all you have to do is say a prayer and
Love will save the day
There’s an answer in your heart, so let your light shine on, my dear
Love will save the day
From “Love Will Save the Day” (1987) written by Toni C., recorded by Whitney Houston.
It seems easy to sing the words – was it just another song on a record to her? There really is a message here. If you didn’t know this was a pop hit and I gave you these words, you would probably feel encouraged… at least I hope you would.
It’s been widely reported in newspapers, magazines and on television tabloid shows about the problems she experienced. The media can take any story or photo and give it a “spin,” whether it’s negative or positive.
She lived a pretty successful life in the early years of her career. We may never know the real stories of living with her now ex-husband. We won’t know the hurts and the scars and the insecurities and doubts that she had to face. Only God knows her heart and the love and relationship she professed to have had with Him.
Regardless of what her state of life was when it ended, I hope she remembered that God loved her. He is a God who is there to “save the day.” My prayer is that she acknowledged her need for a Savior and that she truly knew Him in a personal way.
If Whitney would gone back to listen to this song, would she have been encouraged by these words?
